All companies must have an "Emergency Action
Plan" in place to ensure employee safety in the event of an emergency.
Companies with 10 or more employees must have this plan in writing.
Where employees perform
maintenance or repair work and could be injured by unexpected startup of
machinery or equipment, the employer must develop and implement a
written "Lockout/Tagout Program".
Companies where
employees are exposed to noise levels over 85 dBA averaged over eight
hours are required to implement a hearing conservation program. This
plan is not required to be in writing.
OSHA has
specific regulations for the safe operation and guarding of woodworking
machinery. Violations of these regulations are the most frequently
cited hazards for truss manufacturers.
Oregon OSHA has developed an excellent publication on comprehensive
safety and health programs. While Colorado employers are not
required to develop a formal Safety and Health Program, this is an
excellent resource that describes how an employer can develop a
proactive program to help prevent occupational injuries.
One of the most important elements of a safety and health program is
accident investigation to determine root causes of injuries and prevent
their recurrence.
Employee involvement is critical to the success of any safety and health
program. One of the most frequently used methods for employee
involvement is the safety committee.
